Service Learning Tips and Tricks Faculty Series

Service Learning Tips and Tricks Faculty Series In-Person

Whether you are thinking about trying service learning for the first time or if you are a seasoned pro looking for some new ideas, please join us for the workshops below. Each session will be held from 12:30-1:30 in the Center for Teaching and Learning, Room 320A. Feel free to bring your lunch - we will provide the beverage!

Please attend one or as many sessions as you are able to!

What’s all the hype about service learning? Come learn about the research supporting service learning as a High Impact Practice, different models of service learning, and about how our Program at Marquette works. Hear from veteran faculty and service learning students how service learning has impacted their courses.
To be transformational, service learning needs to be fully integrated and not just something students do outside of class time. In this session we will give a crash course on Integrated Course Design (ICD), a type of backward design that makes integrating and assessing service learning a piece of cake!
  1. Critical Reflection: Thursday, October 3
Continuous, contextualized, challenging reflection is a key component of service learning. Come learn two different techniques for embedding critical reflection. We will also explain the reflection opportunities our program provides for faculty and students. We will even give you some rubrics for grading!
  1. Community Partnerships:  Thursday, October 10
Come hear from a few of our community partners about their experience with service learners, and why they like to partner with MU faculty and service learning students. Learn more about various organizations across Milwaukee, and brainstorm creative ways to develop mutually beneficial partnerships.
It can be tricky to grade service learning assignments for many reasons. Together we will brainstorm ways to create both formative and summative assessments that will help us grade the students’ learning effectively and efficiently.

Please register for each session you plan to attend, thank you!
