Using Clickers to Engage Students In-Person

Why use clickers? And how can you use them effectively to promote student learning? This introductory workshop will give you a brief overview of clickers and peer instruction as a pedagogical tool. We will discuss why and how clickers can be an effective tool for generating student engagement and discussion, with emphasis on results from education research. We will discuss example questions, common challenges, share tips on getting student to argue and reason productively about the questions, and discuss examples of less-effective use.

 

Objectives:

1. Articulate why you would use clickers and Peer Instruction

2. Write effective questions & critically appraise the value of different types of questions

3. Effectively facilitate student discussion and reasoning about the questions
