Education and Relationships in the Age of AI: A Conversation on a Human-Centered Framework Online
AI is everywhere right now, raising questions that are ethical, logistical, educational, and relational. In a recent paper, “From AI as a Relational Breaker to a Relational Broker: Comment on Bauer et al. (2025),” Gabriel Velez, Larry Zhiming Xu, and Jacklynn Fitzgerald focus on the latter in offering a framework navigating the rise of generative AI in education. Rather than framing AI as a threat to academic integrity or authentic learning, they challenge educators to consider how generative technologies might either erode or enhance the relational core of teaching. With a nuanced analysis grounded in educational psychology, the authors invite faculty to sharpen their discernment by exploring when AI use may distance students from meaningful engagement and when it can be intentionally leveraged to deepen dialogue, feedback, and connection.
