A Long, Loving Look at the Real: Framing Difficult News for Our Students and Ourselves

A Long, Loving Look at the Real: Framing Difficult News for Our Students and Ourselves In-Person

The regular dose of news of gun violence in schools, parishes, and at political rallies is disruptive to our own attention, and our students’.  Intractable political issues on the national and international stage generate considerable emotion and leave us wondering what to do with our own feelings, and our students’.  These events shape the background to concerns and uncertainties felt in higher education, and our own campus.  How do we hold these things without lapsing into despair? How might we respond as humans and educators?

Fr. Joseph Simmons, SJ, assistant professor of Theology and faculty teaching fellow at the Center for Teaching and Learning, will offer some thoughts and insights from the Jesuit intellectual and spiritual tradition to lead a lunch-time conversation for faculty and graduate students.
