This symposium shines a light on participating (full-time\, part-time\, and adjunct nontenure-stream) faculty as educators\, scholars\, and leaders at Marquette. Stemming from a deep desire of participating faculty in two Communities of Practice hosted since Spring 2023 and the good work of many in our campus community\, this event honors great work being done by these faculty who teach Marquette’s students\, produce valuable scholarship\, and are willing to share their expertise with the wider campus community through this symposium. All sessions are organized\, hosted\, and facilitated by participating faculty across campus with this year’s theme of culture change highlighting the changing culture of teaching and learning on Day 1 (supporting students\, teaching Core classes\, leaning into the strengths of clinical faculty in the classroom\, and teaching in light of Generative AI) and ways to continue to change Marquette’s culture to support participating faculty as educators\, researchers\, and leaders at Marquette. \n\nParticipating faculty juggle multiple competing responsibilities and often have very full teaching schedules\, so come as you can to what you can\, and feel free to duck out when needed. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGOALS \nBy the end of the Symposium\, attendees and participants should: \n\n\n Learn about and discuss what participating faculty members’ collaborative teaching\, research\, and leadership looks like across campus\; \n Connect with each other to cultivate community\, network\, get new ideas\, and contribute to our teaching and research communities\; \n Celebrate successes in teaching among all symposium participants\, sharing tips and tricks for success\; and \n Elevate awareness about resources available to participating faculty to support them in their teaching\, research\, and leadership desires. \n\n\nAll faculty\, staff\, and graduate students should come! Discovering who we are can help us best represent ourselves in authentic ways to our colleagues and students. It can also help us find ways we can grow and advance as professionals at Marquette. In this interactive session\, participants will unearth and learn about their personal brand archetype\, better understand how “personal branding” can play a key role in communication with students and colleagues\, and understand ways to authentically advocate for themselves within their department\, college\, and our campus community. \n \n \n \n \n 9:30-10:45: Culture Change through Resources and Recognition \n\n Presenters: Jeanne Hossenlopp (Vice President for Research and Innovation)\, Lisa Edwards (Director\, Institute for Women’s Leadership)\, Danielle Nussberger (Associate Director\, Faber Center)\, followed by Participating Faculty Committee Members\, Michael Danduran (Clinical Professor\, Exercise Science) and Gigi Makky (Clinical Professor\, Biomedical Sciences)\n\n This session provides an overview of organizational structures and resources that support participating faculty on campus\, including resources through the Provost’s Office\, the Institute for Women’s Leadership\, the Faber Center. It also will enable meaningful conversation about opportunities to talk with key advocates for participating faculty at Marquette about goals yet to be realized. Active brainstorming among participating faculty and their tenure-stream colleagues will be encouraged to help amplify a culture of change to benefit all.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n\n 11:00-1:00: Changing the Culture of Participating Faculty as Leaders at Marquette...and Lunch! \n\n Facilitators: Jon Metz\, Melissa Shew\, and Julia Schultz\n\n Participating faculty at Marquette have more professional opportunities available to them in the last few years than before\, but there is still more untapped potential to offer the university in ways that benefit Marquette and honor their own professional goals and desires. In these ways\, we still have a long way to go in terms of supporting participating faculty development\, research and scholarship\, and leadership opportunities. This interactive session explores a vision-creation process designed to think deeply about issues and accompanying barriers participating faculty face on campus\, along with thoughtfully considering opportunities to address them. From envisioning a better situation to thinking through the changes needed to achieve it and focusing on participants’ values that underscore their approach to follow\, this reflective process with concrete takeaways for Symposium participants and the wider campus community at Marquette to advance participating faculty as campus leaders. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n 1:00-2:00: Concluding Reflection & Celebration of Teaching in the Center for Teaching and Learning \n\n Teaching is hard! Our day concludes with prizes\, sharing out teaching tips among attendees\, and celebrating teaching successes across campus.
