Creating A Caring Classroom Through Belonging (Mission Week)

Creating A Caring Classroom Through Belonging (Mission Week) In-Person

This session is part of Marquette’s Mission Week

Location: Henke Lounge, AMU

This professional development workshop will focus on building a sense of belonging in the classroom through transparent course design, self-awareness, and small strategies to support inclusion. Participants will have a chance to both learn from and share with colleagues to explore practical strategies for creating inclusive learning environments where all students feel valued and supported.

This session will review the transparent design framework, which can reduce student anxiety and promote equity by focusing on clarifying course expectations, providing thorough descriptions of assessment, and maintaining consistent communication. Faculty will leave with actionable tools to enhance their teaching practices, making their classrooms more welcoming, accessible, and effective for all student populations at Marquette.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Review of fundamental concepts of building inclusionary practices in the classroom;
  • Review of strategies to build belonging and a sense of care in the classroom including but not limited to: stereotype threat, transparent design, and tools for equity.
