Second Annual Participating Faculty Symposium 2024 In-Person
Day 2: Collaborating for Faculty Success: The Research and Leadership Day
This symposium shines a light on participating faculty as educators, researchers, and leaders at Marquette. Stemming from a deep desire of participating faculty in several Communities of Practice hosted through the Center for Teaching and Learning since Spring 2023 and reflective of a variety of desires across campus, this event honors great work being done by these faculty who teach Marquette’s students, produce valuable scholarship, contribute to student success, and lead a host of initiatives across the university. All sessions are organized, hosted, and facilitated by participating faculty across campus, inviting non-participating faculty as guests in some sessions as well.
By the end of the symposium, conference attendees and participants should:
- Learn and discuss what participating faculty members’ collaborative teaching, research, and leadership looks like across campus;
- Connect with each other to cultivate community, network, get new ideas, and contribute to our teaching and research communities;
- Celebrate successes in teaching among all symposium participants, sharing tips and tricks for success;
- Elevate awareness about resources available to participating faculty to support them in their teaching, research, and leadership desires.
All faculty, staff, and graduate students should come! Participating (part- and full-time), tenure-stream faculty, teaching assistants, and staff in all units on campus are welcome to attend.
If you would like to participate by having your research/scholarship or teaching materials displayed throughout the conference, click here. We will be accepting submissions until Friday, November 15. Thank you for your interest!
Note that symposium organizers understand that people have competing priorities, so please attend what you can and leave when you need to on both days. Sign up for Day 1 here
This symposium is organized by the Center for Teaching and Learning and receives support from the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Student Success Initiative, and the College of Arts and Sciences.
Full Schedule:
DAY 2 EARLY SESSIONS: COLLABORATIONS IN AND FOR RESEARCH Organizer: Dr. Paul Gagliardi (English) |
8:30-8:45: Registration, coffee, breakfast |
8:45-9:15: Research Spotlight #1: “Good Enough” Pedagogy: Meta-reflection on Implicitly “Ideal Pedagogy” Presenters: Dr. Abram Capone (Philosophy); Dr. Claire Lockard (Philosophy), Emily Lange (Philosophy)
Pedagogical practices that recognize the economic and personal boundaries of graduate students, adjunct faculty, and increasingly overworked tenure-track and tenured faculty often run against our desires to implement “best practices” in the classroom. In this session, we argue that students are unlikely to benefit from, and teachers should not attempt to practice, ideal pedagogy (if such a thing even exists). We instead hope to develop actionable strategies for identifying, sitting with, and operating within the tension between ‘best’ and ‘good enough’ pedagogical strategies. |
9:15-9:45: Research Spotlight #2: Analysis of PA Student Focus Groups Defining Wellness Presenters: Dr. Francesca Johnson (Clinical Physician Assistant Studies); Dr. Michael Toppe (Physician Assistant Studies); Prof. Alyssa Truong (Physician Assistant Studies); Prof. Nicole Winchester (Physician Assistant Studies)
Student wellness is a hot topic in education, yet wellness is a broad and subjective term. When wellness initiatives were not meeting the needs of students, PA faculty members formed a committee to perform a needs assessment and refine programming. This session will review a novel approach that faculty members implemented to gain insight into what "wellness" means to PA students, present initial results, and discuss the possible next steps on integrating the findings into student success and wellness initiatives. |
9:45-10:00: Presentation from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Participants: Erin Folstad, Director of Project Planning and Development (ORSP); Averia Flasch, Associate Director of Project Planning (ORSP)
This session highlights the opportunities and programs available to participating faculty to conduct their own research and scholarship with the support of this office at Marquette. ORSP helps researchers through all stages of project planning as well as supporting the creation of internal and external grant possibilities. |
10:00-10:15: Presentation from the Institute for Women’s Leadership Presenter Dr. Lisa Edwards, IWL Director, will show the range of research-related opportunities for participating faculty working on issues connected to gender. |
10:15-10:30: Collaborative Research Communities at Marquette Presenters Max Gray (Digital Scholarship Librarian) and Dr. Badar Al Lawati (Management) will share their experiences as participants in different research communities at Marquette and provide insight about how to join those kinds of collaborations through the Office of Research and Innovation and the CTL. |
10:30 –11:00: Breakout Sessions, Incubation Activity—Plus Snacks! Facilitators: Dr. Paul Gagliardi (English), Dr. Virginia Riggs (Nursing) Attendees will share their experiences with and possibilities for collaborative research, focusing on publication, balancing research with teaching, and using resources to support scholarship. Attendees will also have a chance to connect with others to plan possible collaborations with others present. |
DAY 2 LATER SESSIONS: COLLABORATING FOR LEADERSHIP AT MARQUETTE Organizer: Dr. Melissa Shew (Philosophy) |
11:00-1:00: Participating Faculty as Leaders on Campus—plus lunch! Participants: Dr. Manoj Babu (Management/Participating Faculty Senate Representative), Dr. Jenna Green (English/Acting Director, First-Year Writing), Dr. Laurieann Klockow (Associate Chair for Instruction in Biomedical Sciences/Chair, Committee on Teaching), Dr. Michael Olson (Philosophy/Director of the Core Curriculum at Marquette), Dr. Emily Patterson (Department Chair of Speech Pathology and Audiology), Dr. Jacob Riyeff (English/Academic Integrity Director)
This session shines a bright light on the ways that participating faculty across campus have grown into a variety of leadership positions over the past several years while allowing ample opportunity for open discussion about what leadership for participating faculty can and should look like at Marquette. Discussants will share their experiences, challenges, joys, and hopes for the future of leadership at Marquette regarding affirming the gifts and talents of participating faculty both in—and beyond—the classroom. All attendees will be invited to engage in conversation at their tables and with the panelists about all things leadership and participating faculty at Marquette. |
1:00-2:00: Concluding Reflection & Celebration of Teaching in the Center for Teaching and Learning Teaching is hard! Our day concludes with prizes, sharing out teaching tips among attendees, and celebrating teaching successes across campus. Come upstairs to the CTL for lots of celebratory refreshments and food before the holiday break. (Seriously, you will want to come to this. 😊 ) |
