Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Course Design Workshop

Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Course Design Workshop In-Person

Workshop Facilitators:

Graduate students in Loyola University Chicago’s Higher Education Program, led by Dr. Patrick M. Green, Executive Director, Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship (CELTS)

Workshop Description:

This special workshop is designed for teaching assistants and faculty to learn about and develop skills that provide practical ways to teaching in a student learning-centered approach. Drawing on educational theorist Dee Fink’s integrated course design model that focuses on designing courses for significant learning, participants will learn how to write or revise learning outcomes, assess student learning, and develop learning activities that put the student front and center in course design and implementation. Participants will grow in their teaching practice with increased aptitude and expertise in course planning, active teaching, and holistic grading. Participants will receive all workshop materials along with a teaching journal for them to use after the workshop ends. Whether participants have an abundance of teaching experience or none, they are welcome at this workshop.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Foundational Knowledge: Identify core elements of the Integrated Course Design Model, including situational factors, learning outcomes, assessment/feedback, and learning activities.
  2. Application: Reflect on or anticipate situational factors of their courses.
  3. Integration: Develop learning outcomes, assessment assignments, and learning activities that connect and integrate across their course.
  4. Human Dimension: Consider the partnership between instructors and students as all work toward a goal of greater human understanding.
