2nd Annual Faculty Retreat: Belonging as Solace In-Person

BELONGING AS SOLACE

May 23-25, 2023
at The Jesuit Retreat House
4850 Fahrnwald Rd, Oshkosh, WI 54902

The Center for Teaching & Learning invites you to a 2.5-day retreat in Oshkosh on the shores of Lake Winnebago both rest and reflect on teaching with your colleagues across disciplines.

Tuesday May 23 arrival/check in will be from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in the Main Lobby, right when you walk in to the retreat center.

Optional tour at 4:15 for anyone wishing to get the feel of the place.

Retreat orientation at 4:30 with a social following at 5:00 and dinner promptly at 6:00 p.m.

Retreat logistics:

  • This is not a silent retreat, although there will be plenty of opportunities for you to explore the facility and the grounds when and if you are seeking some time for quiet reflection.
  • Please bring appropriate clothing. Weather can vary but you will want to be prepared for time outside as it’s been our experience that this can often be a highlight!
  • They do have bicycles for your use but feel free to bring your own and proper walking shoes. In addition, there are benches and swings on the grounds as well and an exercise room and art studio is open 24 hrs/day. You may also fish along Lake Winnebago.
  • Please bring basic toiletries though there is an area where you can purchase anything you may have forgotten. One set of towels is provided along with bed linens. Extra blankets and pillows are in the dresser in each individual room.
  • We will provide you with writing materials but feel free to bring a journal or any reading material you would like.
  • I am including everyone on this email as sometimes people like to carpool up together.

These are some of the logistics. Now as for the retreat itself:

  • Try not to have too many preconceived notions of what the retreat should accomplish. Let it come to you and meet you where you are.
  • Be intentional about making rest (for renewal, centering, healing) a goal for your retreat.
  • Given good weather consider going outside where you can to be renewed by fresh air, beautiful views, and sunlight.
  • Let your schedule breath. In other words, do as much or little as you feel you need. ALL events are optional including the Sunday morning mass at 11:00 am.
  • Explore the retreat center. There are some beautiful places like the Annunciation Chapel inside and other spaces outside to just go and “be.”
  • Some people will want to have more alone time, some may want to take time to reflect aloud with others. Try to honor both what you are looking for and the desires of others as you can. For example, please limit time on your cell phone particularly with calls for the time in your room.
